I just downloaded mirc on a new computer after a long time away. Can
anyone point me at some servers or rooms that are actually working?

If you're looking for the general chat/meet-new-people I guess IRC is
not being used like this very often. Maybe facebook gonna help you.
But, AFAIK, IRC is very alive and many people and their online
communities use it to interact online, gathered by a common identity
(like file sharing, open-source development, games etc). E.g. rizon
server, for anime related channels.

So my suggestion is ask your favorite online community "hey, where do
you hang out on irc?".

I've got pretty much the same problem. I just paid for mIRC but now I
can't find any interesting channels.

I'll admit that it has been a while since I frequented any group (the last
time was during a certain anime site's difficulties last year). The
trouble is that since people found that IRC (or more accurately DCC) can
be used to share files and bots can be used to trigger share attempts and
such, a lot of channels have become silent. Some servers are nothing more
than file or warez servers with no chat at all on them. I used to be a
regular on IRCnet and less often on Efnet but I don't really touch IRC at
all these days.

Pity, really.
